John's Videos on YouTube

By John Bandler

I decided to build out some videos on YouTube.

Here's why I built these lectures:

  • I have the thoughts and material mostly done already, from teaching and speaking over the years.
  • Students of mine miss class for whatever reason (or their mind drifted off during it) and want to see the lecture.
  • Someone else in the world might want to hear that lecture?
  • Someone is stressed and can't fall asleep, and my soothing lecture on law will help their eyelids droop and sleep take over.
  • A lot of people need solid, reliable information on law, cyber, cybersecurity, and learning.
    • Some people even want it.
    • Some people want a solid, no-frills style (realizing it is not entertainment).
  • Some people prefer to watch a video instead of reading my written resources.
  • Some people just want a quick video, right now, instead of joining one of my online courses at Udemy, which are entire courses on another platform.
  • I can give and share what I know, just like others have shared their knowledge on YouTube which has helped me and my family learn many things, including about science, math, the world, outdoor living (so we don't have to do it ourselves), and more.

My videos are -- or will be someday -- on the topics of:

  • Law
  • Cyber
  • Cybersecurity
  • Policies and policy work
  • Learning
  • Criminal justice
  • Whatever else I feel like.

My videos are simple PowerPoint lectures. Not entertainment, not edutainment, no fancy graphics or editing.

I plan my thoughts ahead, create a PowerPoint, refine it, then hit record, present. I sometimes pause recording between slides, just to get a breath or collect a thought, which keeps these moving faster than they might. If it is half decent I upload the video.

I can barely edit, I don't have a ton of time, and I'm not trying to be perfect. That means some pauses, some misspeaks, maybe even mistakes. Maybe that makes it more natural, like a regular presentation or conversation. (I find that some of the YouTube creator rapid fire narration tires me out).

If you are in a hurry you can always listen at 1.25 speed. Or maybe this is not the style for you.

YouTube description and other metadata

The first slide of my YouTube video contains the date I recorded it. The description will have links and additional references, often to an article on this site. It will note the date the video was posted and date the description was updated.

Disclaimers

All my videos and website come with the usual disclaimers. They are not legal advice, not consulting advice, will contain many simplifications, might become outdated, and may simply be my opinion. There will be some misspeaks and misstatements because I almost never edit after I record.

They are a slide deck and a lecture, there is no production team.

Adapt for you and your circumstances.
