I decided to build out some videos on YouTube(opens in new tab) because I had a lot of teaching material but it was only reaching a finite number of students through traditional teaching. The world is a big place, so I started putting some onto YouTube.

1. Topics of my videos (now or someday)

  • Law
  • Cyber
  • Cyberlaw
  • Cybersecurity
  • Privacy
  • Government
  • Criminal justice
  • Policies and procedures, policy work, management
  • Learning
  • Whatever else I feel like.

My videos are simple PowerPoint lectures. Not entertainment, not edutainment, no fancy graphics, no AI tools, no AI slop, no production team or editing team, minimal editing.

The graphics are mine via PowerPoint with my limited skills. It's rudimentary, but it's me, and it helps my process to think and refine and communicate.

I incorporate work from my prior lectures, articles, or books, and try to improve my thoughts or delivery.

I plan my thoughts ahead, create a PowerPoint, refine it, then record. I sometimes pause recording between slides, just to get a breath or collect a thought, which keeps these moving faster than they might. In earlier videos you hear some pauses, misspeaks, mistakes, background noise. Maybe that makes it more natural, like a regular presentation or conversation.

Now, I am getting better at editing now and I can cut out longer pauses and the glaring mistakes. I can do a second take of a sentence if I flub it, and cut out the first take. The final product is a little bit more polished compared to what it used to be.

In sum, my skills are limited, there is no production team, I don't use AI tools, I don't have a lot of free time, and I'm not trying to be perfect.

If you are in a hurry you can always listen at 1.25 speed. Or maybe these are not right for you.

2. Thumbnails for my videos

My thumbnails are my PowerPoint cover slide. You get the title, simple, clear. It's not catchy or clickbait or deceptive.

For folks looking for a simple, no frills lecture on the topic, this will probably be just fine.

For folks looking for something eye catching, dynamic, and exciting, this will not catch their eye, but my videos are probably not for them either.

3. Here's why I built these videos:

  • I have the material and concepts mostly done already, from teaching and speaking over the years.
  • An aid to current students.
  • An aid to someone else in the world who might want to learn that concept or information.
  • Insomnia help -- if you are stressed and can't fall asleep, my lecture will help you and allow sleep to take over.
  • People need solid, reliable information on law, cyber, cybersecurity, and learning.
    • Some people realize they need it and also want it.
    • Some people want a solid, no-frills style and are not looking for entertainment.
  • Some people prefer to watch a video instead of reading my written resources.
  • Some people just want a quick video, right now, instead of joining one of my online courses at Udemy.
  • I can give and share what I know.
    • Others have shared their knowledge on YouTube which has helped me and my family learn many things, including about science, math, the world, and more.

The first slide of my YouTube video contains the date I recorded it, which is also noted in the description.

The description has links and additional references, including to other videos, articles on this site, and more information (including the date the video was posted and date the description was updated).

8. Creative process and tools (no AI tools)

As indicated above, my videos are a slide deck and a lecture of my creation and delivery. No AI tools are used to brainstorm or create or build (just spell check grammar check tools native with my software). There is no production team. There is barely any editing. Early videos you hear my pauses and misspeaks. Later videos have minor editing, allow cuts of my many pauses, mistakes, and misspeaks. Someday, maybe my editing process will become more sophisticated.

I incorporate my knowledge, experience, and opinion.

Some sensitive individuals get angered at any criticism of the current administration and get angry at that and call it bias. I am not impressed with their logic, reasoning, or grasp of the facts and law, so I call it my reasoned opinion. You have your own brain, and I lay out my view of things and my reasoning. You can accept it, adapt it, or disregard it as you choose, that's part of our freedoms to think and speak.

All my videos and website all come with the usual disclaimers. They are not legal advice or consulting advice and are not tailored to your situation. They contain many simplifications, might become outdated, and sometimes contains my opinion (of course, opinions differ among different people). There will be some misspeaks because I don't always edit after I record (early videos I did not edit, later videos I edit and correct more of the mistakes).
