Cyber

I define "Cyber" in the glossary of my 2025 book, Cyberlaw: Law for Digital Spaces and Information Systems:

Cyber: A much-overused term that is used alone and in combination with almost every other dictionary term (it seems). It mostly means related to computers, networks, and the internet. Related to digital things.

(I defined it similarly in my 2024 book, Policies and Procedures for Your Organization: Build solid governance documents on any topic ... including cybersecurity.)

Cyber is frequently paired with other words and some prominent ones are:

  • Cyberlaw
  • Cybercrime
  • Cybersecurity
  • Cyberspace.

Let's spend a little time on each.

Cyberlaw is the intersection of law and technology. I wrote an entire book on it, and you can read my article on cyberlaw.

Or see my cyberlaw landing page.

Cybercrime

Cybercrime is crime committed using technology, computers, or the internet.

I have an article on cybercrime, my cyberlaw book covers it too, I wrote a book on cybersecurity, and a book on cybercrime investigations.

Cybersecurity is about protecting from cybercrime and protecting information assets from other attacks or disruptions. Cybersecurity is an important part of information governance.

See my article on cybersecurity, my cyberlaw book covers it, my policies book covers it, I wrote a 2017 book on cybersecurity and hope to publish another in 2026. See my article on information governance also.

Or see my cybersecurity landing page.

Cyberspace

My view of cyberspace is that it encompasses everything we do that relates to technology. The things we do in regular life and online all intersect with "cyberspace" to some degree, as we are communicating, data is flowing, and data is being stored in so many places. My cyberlaw book has an introduction to cyberspace and technology.

Sometimes people equate this term for virtual space" or "virtual reality" or "metaverse", but I take a broader view.

Technology

In many ways, cyber is a synonym for technology, so see my article on technology basics, and my cyberlaw book has an introduction to technology.
